Understand the numbers

Temperatures are approximate annual means from NOAA 1991–2020 U.S. Climate Normals, aggregated by PlainClimate. These are station-based averages, not area-weighted state temperatures or current weather. The source rounds to whole °F; °C values are converted from those rounded figures. DC uses one station. Location coordinates are matched against Census state boundaries in your browser and are not sent to a geocoding service.

Official wage estimates. May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, retrieved through O*NET OnLine. This is a fixed snapshot, collected October 5, 2026.

Median means the midpoint. Half of workers earn less and half earn more. Figures cover wage and salary workers across industries; they do not represent total compensation or take-home pay. Self-employed workers are excluded.

Compare with context. Wages are not adjusted for local living costs, taxes, experience, or specialty. Unavailable values are shown as “Not available.” A + marks a published lower bound. Rankings exclude unavailable or bounded medians.

Calculation assumptions & sources

Applies 2026 federal income-tax brackets and standard deductions to wage income. A family of four means two married adults under 65 filing jointly and two dependents, with one earner by default. A second wage is optional. No federal child credit is assumed because ages and eligibility are unknown.

State income tax applies the state's brackets, standard deduction, personal and dependent exemptions, and personal credits for the filing status. Income-based phase-outs of those deductions and credits, state-specific credits, and local income taxes (for example New York City or Ohio municipalities) are not modeled.

Planning estimate, not a paycheck or tax-return calculation. Excludes itemized deductions, retirement contributions, pretax benefits, AMT, refundable credits, other income, and mandatory state payroll premiums. Include health premiums and other payroll costs in expenses without double-counting them. The starting wage is the May 2025 BLS annual median, not a forecast of 2026 pay.
